MIRACLES STILL HAPPEN

Tuesday the 14th November 2006

A 9 am landing in sunshine followed by a bus ride, then re-enter security drill got me to the BA Flt 65 gate just in time to board. Plane about 1/3rd full . A smooth flight ranging from 36-40,000 feet. Had a window seat with the other two seats empty so that was nice. France green with leafless forests, snow on the Alps, Med blue and Africa dusty brown until sunset when it was like flying over Mars with the reddened earth reflecting on the sky. Then realized why Africa called he dark continent- no lights. (I remember flying in a C-130 over western Sahara for 4 hours with only a few oil fires visible.) This flight crossed the Libyan desert and the Darfur Mountains passed the mountains of Ethiopia on the left. I must say the GPS display of the BA flights are the best I've seen on an aircraft- including a world view showing day and night with lots of geographic contour and no political marking. Way the world ought to be.

The luggage made it! Met 13 other people and we sorted out into a couple of 7 passenger land rovers and then I realized I was with hard core travelers- one lady jumped in took a seat next to the van entrance and had to be asked to move over to let the rest in- another threw her purse on an empty seat to reserve it for her husband- it's a dog eat dog world in touring. Nairobi enlarged since last visit 30 years ago, but a 11pm all businesses are shuttered and gas stations surrounded by 10 foot wrought iron fences. Horel Norfolk a huge gem- open courtyards, gardens and nice rooms but too tired to admire so shower and Ambien.
