INAUSPICIOUS BEGINNING

2:34 PM 11/15/2006

Monday the thirteenth of November

Finished up at the office and was able to get to bed before midnight- figured packing would go faster after some sleep- but sleep elusive so at 1:30am took a 5mgm Ambien which lasted til the alarm at 0600. Got busy with the last folding and packing. Phone call at 0800 to tell me that my sister succumbed to her battle with pancreatic cancer at 0300. Had seen her in the hospital a couple of weeks ago where I thought I'd wandered into the wrong room, because she looked more like a 65 yo than thr 88 she was. Anyway, she out of her pain. Unfortunate that I will not make the funeral but I'm not into wakes and viewing.

Emil on time for my ride to Cincinnati, but departures always hectic. Half way there remembered I forgot my backup camera, the Sony Mavica with removable disc, 5 MB but only 3X zoom. So trip will be with Sony Cybershot 7.2 mega which can also take movies and has a 12X zoom, and the Sony Handycan which records to CD 10X zoom and also takes stills so I think I'm covered. Security the usual pain and one more step now that I'm taking my laptop along.

The MD 88 was full and the flight delayed an hour because of weather in JFK- and the connection worry and baggage transfer begins. Flight east was great leaving Ohio with a golden sunset on the high clouds and the light streaming through the low clouds- a spectacular (and camera in the upper compartment). Dark clouds and rain in easter PA and low visibilty landing at JFK with one hold over NY. JFK is a zoo with a 2 block walk to the Air Train to change terminals- glad I checked bags all the way to Nairobi. Terminal 7 packed with Brits going home after using their bargain currency in USA- our dollar is only 50 cents to them. Anyway another wait for the crew so now worry about the connection in Lakenheath. After boarding announced that we were 7000 lbs heavier so we needed more fuel to make it to UK. Only a 6 hour flight and I'm wired so no sleep aids and quick passage to daylight. Memorable event opposite Bangor, Maine when this fully loaded 747 flying at 37,000 feet got bounced around for about 5 minutes- worst clear air turbulence I've ever been in and with the sounds of all the panels screeching, carts falling over, and groans of the crowd it was an adrenaline pumper. But 2 glasses of wine helped.
